How to Request Your Medical Information

Accessing Your Medical Information: A Valuable Right

Accessing your medical records is a valuable right that many people might not be aware of. In Ireland, the Freedom of Information Act grants you the authority to request your medical data from healthcare institutions. In this blog post, we'll guide you through the process of requesting your medical information and shed light on why it's an essential step in managing your healthcare.

Why Request Your Medical Information?

First, let's address the "why." Access to your medical records is vital, especially when your health condition involves visits to multiple consultants.

In Ireland, we do not have an Electronic Health Record, meaning there is no centralised database that links our health data when visiting different Healthcare Institutions. It also means we often do not have access to our own medical information freely. This is simply a workaround for us patients to gain access to valuable information that can be used to bridge this gap.

During medical appointments, we also receive a wealth of information, and it can be challenging to absorb everything discussed. Having access to your medical records afterward allows you to:

  • Reflect: Review the information at your own pace to ensure you fully understand your condition and treatment options.

  • Summarise: Condense complex medical jargon into straightforward notes that you can bring to other consultant visits.

  • Stay Informed: Ensure that you are up-to-date on your medical history and have all the information you need to make informed decisions about your health.
